Can You Eat Just One?
I have always loved potato chips.
I knew they were talking about me when they said “ I bet you can’t eat just one.”
But a funny thing has happened over the years.
We all seem to think that we have no will power. That we HAVE to have our favorite snack or fast food or we’ll die. The craving takes over!!!!
Well, it might not be your will power after all.
Have you ever heard of MSG?
Your first thought probably went to Chinese food. Right?
Well, guess what. It’s in so many products you might be shocked.
Ok, stick with me a bit – you’re probably thinking “what does that have to do with anything.”
Well, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is used to bring out the flavor in foods. Yes – that’s right – it’s a flavor enhancer.
It’s also an excitotoxin.
So, what is an excitotoxin?
These are substances, usually amino acids, that react with specialized receptors in the brain in such a way as to lead to destruction of certain types of brain cells.
According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, an author and neurosurgeon, excitotoxins can cause sensitive neurons to die. He wrote a book on this very topic over 15 years ago: Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills.
Many people experience a host of side effects like headaches – instant, tingly headaches, splitting headaches & migraines, itchy skin, dizziness and respiratory, digestive, circulatory and coronary concerns and degenerative brain diseases!!!!!
Others just can’t stop eating whatever it’s found in, without realizing why. Usually they think they have no willpower.
So where can you find it. It might be easier to ask where can’t you find it.
Start checking the ingredients of your favorite foods. It’s in fast foods, snack foods such as seasoned chips, peanuts, canned soups, onion soup mixes, canned vegetables, processed meats, frozen foods, diet foods and on & on.
Liquid forms of excitotoxins (soups, gravies and diet soft drinks) are more toxic than those added to solid foods because they are more rapidly absorbed and reach higher blood levels.
Unfortunately for us, the corporate food processors not only continue to add MSG to our foods, but they have gone to great lengths to disguise these harmful additives. For example, they use such names as hydrolyzed vegetable protein, vegetable protein, hydrolyzed plant protein, caseinate, yeast extract, and natural flavoring.
So next time you think you have lost control & want to kick yourself for non stop eating, give yourself a break.
Start looking at labels & see what you find. Enjoy snacks on your own terms. Your brain deserves it.

This was very interesting; I will have to bake my own chips from now on!
Hi Ligia.
I often like to make my own, but if time doesn’t permit, I buy some at Whole Foods. They are great at not representing lines with harmful ingredients.
Very interesting. To think many years ago I used to buy it and sprinkle on my food when cooking. Haven’t done that in years but sometimes I get itchy all over. Now I’m going to be aware of what I ate. May not be related but doesn’t hurt to check these things out thoroughly.
Hi Loretta.
I was shocked to see that you can still buy MSG in a convenient shaker bottle. Yikes!! How scary.
Isn’t it amazing how sometimes we get side effects from certain ingredients but yet never link the two together. Many people get headaches & take a pain reliever because they don’t recognize that what they’re eating might be the cause.
Dear Chris,
Again you have given information that is not only helpful but healthful, too. You go Girl! Lois
Thanks Lois – my pleasure.
